Eating out: meaty vegan options at the big chains

Burgers, sausage rolls, spicy fillets and subs — the plant-based meaty options on UK chain menus. We checked every item on the chain's own website and note exactly how each chain labels it, because "plant-based" doesn't always mean vegan.

  • Burger King

Burger King UK's Vegan Royale is certified by the Vegan Society. The Plant-based WHOPPER is also on the menu, but Burger King says it's cooked on the same broiler as the beef WHOPPER, so we haven't listed it as vegan.

  • Greggs

The bakery chain that made the vegan sausage roll famous. The Vegan Roll Pork-Free is still on the menu.

  • KFC

KFC's UK vegan menu has a Vegan Burger that uses its famous 11 herbs and spices on a Quorn fillet.

  • LEON

LEON has two vegan-tagged meaty options: a plant-patty burger and a plant-based sausage breakfast muffin.

  • Nando's

Nando's has a new-recipe PERi-Plant Fillet, marked plant-based on its UK menu, served in The Great Imitator Wrap or added as an extra. Nando's notes that its allergens have changed, so check before you order.

  • Subway

Subway UK's May 2026 allergen guide lists a Plant Patty and Pulled Plant as fillings suitable for vegans, plus Vegan CheeZe. Subway says vegan ingredients may come into contact with non-vegan ones.

Before you order

  • Menus change and not every branch sells every item. Check the chain's app or menu board.
  • Some kitchens cook plant-based items on the same grill or in the same fryer as meat. If that matters to you, or you have an allergy, ask the staff — restaurants must be able to give you accurate information about the 14 major allergens.
  • Changing an order (adding cheese or mayo, say) can make a vegan item non-vegan.
